和の心 けがれ

Kegare is a condition of pollution or defilement in the Shinto religion.
Causes include contact with death, childbirth or disease.
Children and virgin girls are naturally pure, but adults, inevitable, are not.
They therefore have to go through purification rites at shrines or other places of other places of worship to rid themselves of their kegare because they cannot present themselves to the gods in a polluted or defiled state.
