願 Gan

Request

和の心 願い20131215

People pray for a variety of things at shrines: for a child to get into a good high school or university, for instance, or for the success of a business venture. This sort of request to the gods is called gan. When making such a request of the gods, the Japanese believe they should purify themselves and get their desires under control. By this token, a man who liked alcohol might stand a better chance of his prayers being answered if he gave up drinking for the duration.
