忠 Chu

忠 Chu

Loyalty

The concept of chu means respecting and serving a person(often of high rank) from whom one has received a favor.

In feudal times, when rank and position were more clearly defined than today.

Chu was thus a more important ethical norm than it is now.

It can still be seen in the loyalty Japanese people have for their companies, and their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the good of the group.
