「内と外」 Uchi to Soto

Inside and Outsaide

The Japanese regard people to whom they are close as ‘inside'(uchi) and those with whom they have a more distant, impersonal relationship as ‘outside'(soto) .
To reduce the risk of emotional complications, the Japanese fend to be open about their personal feelings only with people they feel are inside their social circle.
In the business world, the Japanese like to go out for dinner and drinks with their counterparts to build a relationship in which both parties can be ‘inside’ This, they believe, will help business go better.
