Filial Piety

Under the system of Confucian morals, children were expected to treat their parents一especially the father一with the utmost respect and consideration.
During the feudal period, they even had to address them as if they were persons of a different rank.
This attitude, called Kô(filial piety), exists not just in Japan, but other Confucian countries like Korea.
These days the relationship of parent and child is much casual, but filial piety is still considered an important social value.

孝（こう）とは

孝（こう）とは、子どもが自身の親に忠実に従うことを示す道徳概念です。
孔子が親を敬し親の心を案じ、礼に従って奉養祭祀すべきことを説きました。
社会的犯罪については「父は子の為（ため）に隠し、子は父の為に隠す」と述べました。
やがて孝は『孝経』において、道徳の根源、宇宙の原理として道徳の根源、形而上（けいじじょう）化され無条件服従と父子相隠は法律にも明文化されました。
祖先祭祀にとって「孝」は重要な原理となります。
