仏　Butsu Buddhism

Buddhism is thought to have reached Japan in the seventh century.
In its early period, it was focused on Buddha the man, but gradually , as more sects developed, it became about a god who relieved human suffering.
It also changed from a meditative discipline targeting enlightenment to one based on chanting in a quest for salvation in the next world.
Unlike Shinto, Buddhism encourages a belief in the afterlife.
