The Gods 神 Kami
When Japanese refer to kami, they usually mean the gods of shinto religion , the indigenous of Japan.
In Shinto there are multiple gods who reside in waterfalls, rocks, lakes and large trees.
As worshippers of the mysteries of nature, the Japanese liked to purify themselves before natural objects through ascetic training.
Sitting beneath a mountain waterfall is an example of such a religious rite.
The natives Shinto religion later mixed with elements of Buddhism from Asia to create the unique spiritual values of Japan.
