願 Gan

Request

People pray for a variety of things at shrines: for a child to get into a good high school or university, for instance, or for the success of a business venture.
This sort of request to the gods is called gan.
When making such a request of the gods, the Japanese believe they should purify themselves and get their desires under control.
By this token, a man who liked alcohol might stand a better chance of his prayers being answered if he gave up drinking for the duration.

 

日本では神さまや仏さまに願いごとをすることを願掛けといいます。
皆さまはどのような願掛けをされてるのでしょうね。
